Maya Morsy was elected on Monday as the new head of Egypt’s National Council for Women, succeeding Mervat El-Talawy.
The elections came after a decision by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi last week to reshuffle the council’s staff.
Talawi was the head of the council for almost four years, after being elected in February 2012.
New chairwoman Morsy previously worked as the United Nations Women Country coordinator.
She has also occupied the position of Regional Gender Practice Team Leader in the UN’s Development Programme since March 2013.

Morsy holds a bachelor degree from the American University in Cairo and an MBA from London City University.
The National Council of Women was founded by a presidential decree in 2000 and was headed by former first lady Suzanne Mubarak until her husband, Hosni Mubarak, was deposed in 2011.
Its board was disbanded and reformed in 2012 after El-Talawy’s election.
