UAE has on Friday granted a patent for a ‘promising’ potential treatment for coronavirus using stem cells, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s statement.
The potential treatment is developed by a team of doctors and researchers at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre (ADSCC). The team have made global strides in their development of treatment, which involves the extraction of stem cells from a patient’s own blood and reintroducing them into the lungs via inhalation of a mist.

73 Emirati coronavirus patients have all been successfully treated and cured of the virus using the new treatment.
The ADSCC has developed a treatment method that regenerates lung cells and prevents the immune system from overreacting, Hend Al Otaiba, Director of Strategic Communications with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a tweet on Friday.
“[This] could have a significant impact on our ability to live with the virus until a vaccine is available,” Al Otaiba added.

So far, none of those patients who received the treatment have reported any immediate side effects.
The ADSCC treatment has successfully undergone its initial phase of clinical trials to ascertain its safety. However, more clinical trials to demonstrate the efficacy of the treatment are ongoing and are expected to be completed in a couple of weeks.
Later the day, UAE’s Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has commended ADSCC’s promising treatment.
It said in a statement: “The Ministry is following with great attention the developments of this breakthrough and fully supports the earnest efforts being made by the team of scientists and medical experts from the Ministry and the academia to provide treatment to COVID-19 patients.”
