According to local news, Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has ordered officials to start the national programme to replace tuk-tuks with mini-vans running with natural gas.
Tuk-tuk or rickshaw is a common form of urban transportation in many countries around the world, including Egypt, China, and South Africa. India is the world’s largest auto rickshaw manufacturer.
Locally named the tuk-tuk, the rickshaw is used to provide transportation in the alleys and small streets in Egypt
Despite being a cheap and alternative means of transportation in Egypt, many citizens say it has been used in crimes such as theft, thuggery, drug trafficking, and sexual harassment.
The common type of the auto rickshaw is characterised by a sheet-metal body or open frame resting on three wheels; a canvas roof with drop-down side curtains; a small cabin at the front for the driver, with handlebar controls; and a cargo, passenger, or dual purpose space at the rear.
