A five-year-old boy died of bird flu on Wednesday in Upper Egypt, bringing the number of deaths in Egypt from the H5N1 virus to ten, the health ministry said.
The child was suffering from a fever, cough, sore throat and difficulty in breathing before being transferred to hospital in the southern city of Aswan earlier this week, state news agency MENA reported.
The child’s mother said he had handled infected birds.
This is the 22nd case of infection in the country in 2014.
The Egyptian health ministry called on people who handle poultry to seek immediate treatment once symptoms start to appear, while strictly advising them to cover their noses and mouths when they deal with any kind of domesticated birds.
