Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will meet in Cairo Saturday with President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Egyptian state TV reported.
Both officials will speak to the media after the meeting.
Tusk said on Twitter that he will report the findings of his travels to Egypt, Jordan and Turkey to the extra European Council leaders summit next Wednesday, where European leaders will discuss how to deal with the refugee crisis.
“Extra #EUCO to discuss our overall approach to refugee crisis and cooperation with 3rd countries & return and readmission,” Tusk tweeted Friday.
Tusk had summoned EU leaders to attend an emergency summit on Wednesday 23 September to discuss a proposal to distribute 120,000 asylum seekers across the 28 EU countries, after EU interior ministers failed on Monday to agree on a quota system for the distribution.
The European Council is where the highest level of meetings between EU countries take place, as they are attended by EU leaders.
The common foreign and security policy is set by the Commission, which also discusses sensitive issues which cannot be settled by lower level representation.
Europe has been facing a migrant crisis with the influx of thousands of refugees from different zones of conflict including Syria and Iraq.
