Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi expressed on Tuesday his condolences to his Mexican counterpart Enrique Peña Nieto for the death of Mexican tourists in Egypt’s Western Desert, state agency MENA reported.

In a phone call with the Mexican president, El-Sisi asserted that Egypt will not hesitate to provide all the cooperation and support needed, assuring that the injured are getting the necessary medical care and that Egypt stands with the families of the victims.

Al-Sisi also stressed that he is personally following up on the investigation to determine the full details of the incident.

According to presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef, the Mexican president expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the attention that El-Sisi has shown regarding this incident, praising Egyptian efforts to assist and provide the necessary medical care for the injured.

The two presidents affirmed their appreciation of the “historical relationship” between the two countries, Youssef added.

On Tuesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry addressed the people of Mexico in an open letter that is set to be published in major Mexican newspapers on Wednesday regarding the incident.

Nieto announced that the Mexican tourists who suffered the attack in Egypt will be brought back to Mexico by presidential plane.

Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Claudia Massieu is expected to be on board the Mexican presidential plane along with doctors and families of the victims.

According to AFP, Massieu said she wanted answers for the attack that killed 12 people, describing it as “unjustified”.

She is expected in Cairo at 22:00 GMT.

On Sunday, Egyptian security forces killed 12 members of a tour group in the Western Desert after mistaking them for militants.

According to Egyptian prosecutors, at least eight of the 12 dead and seven of the 10 injured were Mexican nationals, including one person with dual US nationality. The injured have been sent to Dar Al-Fouad Hospital in 6 October City on Cairo’s outskirts.

None of the injured is in a critical condition.
