Egypt’s General Prosecutor referred Tuesday investigations concerning “fabricated” secret recordings of top military brass discussing how to manipulate the legal status of former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi’s detention to military prosecution.
Last week, Turkey-based television channel, Mekammeleen, broadcasted a secret audio recording of General Mamdouh Shaheen, legal advisor to the defence minister, speaking on the phone with key security officials including interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim.
Initial investigations showed that the Brotherhood have been using media supported by foreign agendas to “fabricate” phone calls using advanced technology, the prosecution said in a statement.
The general prosecution highlighted that Muslim Brotherhood members have been trying everything possible to influence judges in charge of cases for its top leadership.
During the audio recording, the man alleged to be Shaheen discusses possible legal justifications for keeping Morsi detained in a building that allegedly belongs to Egypt’s navy in Abu Qir in Alexandria.
Morsi and much of the group’s leadership are in jail facing trial on a myriad of charges that could carry the death sentence.
The former president was ousted on 3 July 2013, after one year in office, following three-days of mass protests.
The Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, was labelled terrorist by the cabinet. Many of his supporters have since been arrested and prosecuted.
