Presidency To Implement ‘Final’ Court Ruling On Top Prosecutor: Spokesman

Egypt’s presidency will respect a final court ruling regarding the position of prosecutor-general, presidential spokesman Ihab Fahmy said on Wednesday, according to Al-Ahram’s Arabic-language news website.

“Regarding appeals of the court ruling calling for [former prosecutor-general] Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud to return to his post, these are still being discussed and the final ruling will be carried out,” he said.

At a press conference held at the presidential palace in Cairo, Fahmy said that the presidency would refrain from commenting on judicial rulings.

The spokesman added that the office of Egypt’s prosecutor-general functioned on “an independent basis,” stressing that the presidency did not interfere in his work.

On 27 March, a court ruling reversed President Morsi’s November 2012 decision sacking Mahmoud and replacing him with current prosecutor-general Talaat Abdullah.

Opposition groups argue that, under Egyptian law, the prosecutor-general can only be dismissed by judicial decree and not by the president.
