Egypt’s High Elections Committee (HEC) has said it will announce on Wednesday 17 September which candidates it has accepted to run for parliament in the upcoming elections, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported on Monday.
Applications were accepted until Saturday with the election process set start on 17 October.
However, in the governorates of Qena and Qous, the deadline for candidacy applications has been extended to 15 September after a recent court ruling on redrawing constituency boundaries.
Some independent applicants had undergone medical check-ups in February when registering to run in parliamentary elections scheduled for March but were postponed.
The court ruled last week that their check-ups are not valid for the October elections, but there had been some confusion and therefore the deadline in those places was extended.
On Saturday some 900 people applied to run, bringing the number of prospective candidates to 5,936.
