A student died on Friday after sustaining birdshot wounds in clashes between security forces and a number of Muslim Brotherhood supporters in the Nile Delta governorate of Sharqiya.
The 23-year-old student was passing by and wasn’t involved in the protests, the director of investigations with Sharqiya’s police department, Atef Mahran, told Reuters’ Aswat Masriya.
Mahran added that the police dispersed dozens of Brotherhood supporters who organised a protest in the vicinity of Derb Nagm police station chanting “against state institutions.”
The Muslim Brotherhood, from which ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi hails, had called on Egyptians to protest on Friday against the death verdict issued against Morsi last week.
The Brotherhood was declared a terrorist organisation in 2013, and has had a dwindling presence in Egyptian streets amid a heavy crackdown by the authorities.
On Tuesday, a Cairo court sentenced 99 defendants to death, including Morsi, on murder charges in the case known as Natroun prison break of 2011.
Also on Friday, security forces dispersed a protest by dozens of Muslim Brotherhood followers in Cairo’s Matariya district. The district, which is considered a hub for the group’s supporters, has witnessed many clashes and casualties between police, locals and protesters since Morsi’s ouster.
