New suspects arrested over Cairo church bombing: Interior ministry

by Noha Gad

Egypt’s Ministry of Interior announced on Wednesday evening the arrest of three more people suspected of involvement in the Cairo church bombing in December that left 28 people dead and over 40 injured.

According to a ministry statement, the three suspects were plotting further terrorist attacks.

The ministry said that one of the suspects is connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, adding that the search is ongoing for more possible suspects.

Four suspects have been arrested earlier in December, including one woman.

A suicide bomber, identified as 22-year-old Egyptian national Mahmoud Shafiq Mohamed Mostafa, set off explosives in the women’s section of the St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Cairo in December.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility of the attack, whereas the Egyptian Ministry of Interior accused members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood organisation residing in Qatar of plotting the bombing.
