Zagazig Criminal Court sentenced Saturday ousted president Mohamed Morsi’s nephew Mohamed Said to life in prison for attempting to murder a fellow student in Zagazig University.
Three others were also sentenced to life in prison along with Said on the same charge.
Prosecution investigations established that the incident took place in December 2013, when a number of pro-Morsi students organised a protest inside the campus of Zagazig University in Sharqiya governorate.
Student Mohamed Fathy Abo El-Ella, a Morsi opponent, expressed his displeasure at the disruption of classes. His complaint was met with physical attacks by some pro-Morsi protesters, prosecution investigations revealed.
Morsi was ousted 3 July 2013 amid three-day mass protests. Following his ouster, student protests erupted in a number of universities nationwide, demanding his release and reinstatement.
Hundreds of students have since been arrested for violating a protest law passed in November 2013 that stipulates that interior ministry permission is required for any protest.
Many have been charged with rioting and sabotaging public and private properties, among other offences.
In the new 2014-2015 academic year, which started in October after a two-week delay, Egypt’s government toughened security procedures on campuses.
The cabinet also toughened punishments on faculty members joining or endorsing student protests.
Protests, however, continue in a number of universities across Egypt.
