Hundreds of Egyptian protestors on Friday staged a demonstration outside defence ministry headquarters in Cairo’s Nasr City district to call on the military to take over executive authority from President Mohamed Morsi.
Protesters urged Defence Minister Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi to mobilise the army to assume control of the nation’s affairs.
The protest was initially called for by controversial television presenter Tawfik Okasha. As of 6:30pm, however, Okasha – who currently faces charges of inciting violence against President Morsi – had yet to show up at the demonstration.
At the same time, hundreds of Islamist protestors also gathered near defence ministry headquarters to support the beleaguered presidency in the run-up to planned anti-Morsi rallies on 30 June.
Seventeen Islamist parties took part in Friday’s pro-Morsi rallies in Cairo – which drew hundreds of thousands of demonstrators – including the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, the Wasat Party, Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya’s Building and Development Party, and the Salafist Watan and Asala parties.
