Libya’s FM to visit Egypt Today ahead of Arab League Summit

Libya’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Al-Dairi is scheduled to visit Egypt on Saturday ahead of an Arab League summit later in March.

During his visit to Cairo, Al-Dairi will also attend the Arab ministerial meeting on 9 and 10 March, which will include discussions on the recent developments in conflict-torn Libya.

The Arab summit, which will also see discussions on possible solutions to the deteriorating situation in Libya, will take place on 28 and 29 March at Egypt’s Sharm Al-Sheikh resort.

Cairo was recently affected by the violence in neighbouring Libya when the Islamic State militant group in Libya posted a video of the beheading of 20 Coptic Egyptians on a beach in Libya.

On 16 February, a few hours after the release of the beheading video, Egypt in coordination with the Libyan army launched airstrikes on IS targets in the Libya city of Derna.

Egypt has since pushed for a draft UN Security Council resolution, submitted by council member Jordan, that would see a four-year arms embargo on Libya lifted.

Cairo has called for the Libyan military to be armed to fight IS militants.

The United States and United Kingdom, who have veto power in the Security Council, have ruled out military intervention in Libya and called instead for a political solution.

The Security Council is yet to vote on the draft resolution.
