Libyan armed forces freed Sunday three Egyptian workers detained by militant groups in Benghazi, reported Egypt’s MENA state news agency.
The Libyan Armed Forces’ Engineering Units spokesperson in Benghazi stated the three Egyptians, who had been working in a bakery, were detained in the area of El-Sabarai in Benghazi by a militant group.
Upon being freed, the three workers were transferred to local hospital and are set to be repatriated back to Cairo soon.
The Engineering Units of the Libyan Armed Forces have started to comb Benghazi for landmines planted by militants in the city.
Egypt launched airstrikes against Islamic State militant group targets in Libya’s eastern city of Derna in February after the group beheaded 20 Egyptian Coptic workers in the city of Sirte.
Following the strikes, Egypt said it would evacuate Egyptian workers who opt to leave the war-torn country.
According to official statements, 800,000 to 900,000 Egyptian expats work and live in Libya.
