Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Friday the government would be extending the nationwide lockdown to contain the coronavirus until May 3. However, a few types of shops will be allowed to re-open from April 14.
“This is a difficult but necessary decision for which I take all political responsibility,” Conte said at a news conference.
Italy imposed on March 9 draconian curbs on movement and the shutdown on most shops and businesses across the country. These measures were scheduled to expire on Monday.
Conte said among a few exceptions to the lockdown extension are bookshops, stationers, and shops selling children’s clothes. They could reopen from April 14.
