India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has visited the Giza Pyramids on Sunday, as part of his official visit to Egypt, which is also his first visit to Egypt.
Modi was accompanied by Mostafa Madbouly, the Egyptian Prime Minister, as well as Ahmed Eissa, the Minister of Tourism, who gifted him a replica of the golden mask of King Tutankhamun after the visit.
“We had a rich discussion on the cultural histories of our nations and how to deepen these linkages in the times to come,” said Modi on social media.

Modi visited Al-Hakim Mosque in Historic Cairo prior to his Pyramids visit, and was welcomed and accompanied by Mostafa Waziry, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
They viewed restoration works that were carried out in collaboration between both the ministries of tourisms and antiquities and religious endowments, along with the Bohra community in Egypt, who are Shia Muslims with Indian roots.
Modi also visited the War Grave cemetery in Heliopolis, where he paid tribute to the Indian soldiers that died fighting in Egypt and Palestine during World War I.

Modi’s two-day visit to Egypt started on Saturday, after an invitation from President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, and included a meeting with Madbouly and seven cabinet members, in which they discussed deepening trade relations and partnership between the two countries.
Modi also met President Al Sisi, who granted him the Order of the Nile award, Egypt’s highest state honor.
Modi’s visit is the first for an Indian prime minister since 1997, with this year marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and India.
