Gaddafi Aide To Remain In Egyptian Jail Despite Release Order

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Ahmed Gadhaf Al-Dam, a close aide of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, will remain in detention despite a release order by Egypt’s general prosecution.

The order was made to releasem Gadhaf Al-Dam on corruption charges after he served 30 days in provisional detention. However, he will remain in detention on charges of possessing unlicensed weapons and illegal surveillance devices, resisting arrest and attempting to murder police officers.

Gadhaf Al-Dam has denied the charges. He claims he did not own the weapons and wireless devices found in his apartment and that he did not attempt to kill the police officers who arrested him.

He was arrested in March at his home in Cairo’s upscale Zamalek neighbourhood, along with other former Gaddafi regime members.

Tripoli has demanded Al-Dam’s extradition to Libya. But an Egyptian administrative court recently ruled against the move after Al-Dam’s lawyer presented documents showing his client was an Egyptian national who had requested political asylum.
