Egypt’s military chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi reshuffled top regional army posts on Monday, including the heads of Egypt’s second army and Egypt’s southern military zone.
Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported that Major General Ahmed Wasfy, the commander of the second army, was replaced with Major General Mohamed El-Shahat, the second army’s chief-of-staff.
The second army is the regional division stationed along the Suez Canal and in North Sinai. The division has been engaged in a war on militants in Sinai which has intensified since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last July.
Wasfy was appointed head of the military’s training authority.
The southern military zone command was given to Major General Yehia El-Gebeily, the former chief-of-staff. Former commander Major General Mohamed Arafat was made head of the army’s inspection authority.
El-Sisi is widely expected to resign soon and announce his bid for the country’s presidency. A landslide win is anticipated for the army chief who led Morsi’s ouster after mass protests against him.
