Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hailed the bravery and vision of late president Mohammed Anwar El-Sadat in creating peace in the region.
Sisi made the comments during a speech on Tuesday marking a century since the birth of the Nobel Peace laureate.
Sisi said that the 1973 October War with Israel restored dignity for the Egyptian and Arab people and paved the way for El-Sadat to make peace.
“The October War paved the way for president Anwar El-Sadat to carry out the most promising initiatives of the modern era,” said Sisi.
In 1978, Egypt and Israel signed at the White House the Camp David peace accords.
Sisi stressed that El-Sadat’s message was clear, that Egypt “does not accept injustice and humiliation. Egypt seeks a just peace and seeks development and prosperity for its people, its region and the world.”
The president also pointed out that El-Sadat dedicated his life to the homeland.
El-Sadat was the third president of Egypt, serving from 15 October 1970 until his assassination by Islamists fundamentalists on 6 October 1981.
The 1973 war eventually led to Israeli forces withdrawing from the Sinai Peninsula in 1982 after 15 years of occupation.
