Egypt’s Sharqiya governor Reda Abdel-Salam was sacked from his position by the cabinet on Friday, he told Ahram Arabic website.

“[Minister of local development Ahmed Zaki Badr] instructed me over the phone that I should not go to the governorate headquarters and that I should stay home,” Reda Abdel-Salam told Ahram.

The deputy governor will serve as acting governor until the new governor is appointed.

He was appointed as Sharqiya governor in February.

It is unclear why Abdel-Salam was sacked.

Several media reports have suggested that a wider gubernatorial reshuffle might be hours away.

Sharqiya in the eastern Delta is the third most populous governorate in Egypt.

Abdel-Salam is a professor of economics and public finance at the Faculty of Law at Mansoura University.

He was appointed as Sharqiya governor in February.
