Egypt’s New Premier Has No Social Media Accounts: Cabinet Media Advisor

by Yomna Yasser

Egypt’s new Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb has no accounts on social media, the cabinet’s advisor for media affairs Sherif Shawky said on Monday.

Shawky said that any statements concerning Mehleb and his new cabinet will be published on the cabinet’s official websiteor Facebook page.

The statement comes after several accounts emerged on Twitter and Facebook impersonating the premier.

Mehleb, a former housing minister, was sworn in on Saturday along with 31 ministers after the resignation of outgoing prime minister Hazem El-Beblawi.

There’s no shortage of independent politicians and political activists using Facebook and Twitter in Egypt. But politicians in governmental positions aren’t usually known to use social media.

Notable Egyptian political figures that have used social media for statements while in office include ousted president Mohamed Morsi as well as Mohamed ElBaradei, former vice president to Egypt’s current interim president Adly Mansour.
