Egypt’s Army Chief Of Staff Meets UK National Security Advisor

by Amwal Al Ghad English

The chief of staff of Egypt’s armed forces, Lieutenant General Mahmoud Hegazy, met with a British delegation in Cairo on Thursday headed by national security advisor John Jenkins.

Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported that officials had discussed mutual interests, including the “war on terrorism” and regional developments.

Hegazy said he looks forward to more cooperation between Cairo and London.

The meeting was attended by top Egyptian army officers.

Earlier in August, media reports suggested that in 2015 the British government had increased the number of arms exports with Egypt after a reduction following the 2013 ouster of president Mohamed Morsi.

In June, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi received an invitation from British Prime Minister David Cameron to visit London. The Guardian reported this month that war crimes lawyers in the British capital have warned that they would seek to have El-Sisi arrested and charged with crimes related to the dispersal of the Rabaa sit-in in 2013, should he visit the country.
