Egypt’s 6 April Calls Hunger Strike To Demand Members’ Release

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Thirty members of Egypt’s 6 April Youth Movement declared a hunger strike on Friday to demand the release of fellow group members detained by authorities, Mohamed Ibrahim, member of 6 April’s political bureau, said on Friday.

Several April 6 members were arrested during protests against police violence held last month outside the interior minister’s Cairo residence.

Those taking part in the hunger strike include group members from Cairo, Giza, Alexandria and Sharqiya. They do not plan to hold the strike in a single location, Ibrahim told Al-Ahram’s Arabic-language news website.

The hunger strike aims to raise public awareness about alleged mistreatment and torture suffered by the detained activists, said Ibrahim.

Last week, the movement released a statement alleging that detained group members were being treated inhumanely in prison.
