Egyptian Jewish community celebrated the New Year (Rosh Hashanah) at the Vitali Madjar Synagogue in Heliopolis on Friday for the first time in 70 years. The celebration was organised by the Drop of Milk Egypt NGO.
Members of the Jewish community in Cairo attended the celebration along with foreign diplomats and Egyptians of other faiths. The celebration marks the 5784 in the Jewish calendar, beginning at sunset on 15 September to the 17th.
Magda Haron, the head of Jewish community in Cairo, led the Jewish New Year service.
The Vitali Madjar Synagogue was inaugurated in 1928, and has been renovated in 2017. It has been hosting a number of events including Hanukkah last December.
