Egypt ‘strongly condemns’ Syria attacks that killed 180 people

by aya salah

Egypt condemned the terrorist attacks that took place near a Shia shrine outside Syria’s capital Damascus and in Homs on Sunday, killing over 180 people, Egyptian foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid said on Monday.

“Egypt strongly condemns all forms of terrorism and calls on the international community to unite its efforts in order to end this abhorrent phenomenon,” Abu Zeid said after the attacks, which were claimed by the Islamic State militant group.

Top Egyptian officials, most notably foreign minister Sameh Shoukry, have recently been participating in international and regional ministerial meetings on Syria.

Egypt’s stance towards the ruling regime of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad has been neutral since the civil conflict started in 2011.
