The Egyptian government is implementing ambitious strategies to localise the pharmaceutical industry, and turn Egypt into a regional hub, said the Egyptian Prime Minister, Moustafa Madbouly on Tuesday.

Madbouly’s comments came during the second edition of Africa Health ExCon Conference, where he stressed that it is time for Egypt to regain its leading role, with the localisation of the pharmaceutical industry being a top priority.

“Egypt has received widespread praise for localising the production of COVID-19 vaccines, which was one of the key elements in the country’s success to combat the pandemic,” Madbouly added.

Egypt has also succeeded in locally producing more affordable contraception methods that are 30:50 percent lower in cost than foreign alternatives.

Madbouly also stressed on the need to synchronize all initiatives for a true rebirth over the entire African continent, and achieving a genuine integration with African countries in medicine.

Madbouly mentioned the key role of the Egyptian Authority for Unified Procurement, Medical Supply, and Technology Management (UPA), which has ensured an equitable access of medicinal and health technology products.

The UPA’s role also included conducting evidence-based technology assessments, strategic value-driven procurement methods and establishing a robust and sustainable supply chain.

The Authority is contributing to Egypt’s plan to localise pharmaceutical industry, by collaborating with UNICEF to render Egypt as a regional hub by supplying the organization’s needs in regional relief operations.

Mabdouly concluded his remarks by mentioning that Egypt is expected to accept UNICEF’s invitation to attend the International Medical Supply Conference in Copenhagen at the end of June. Egypt’s participation will help promote the national healthcare industry, leading to opening markets and export opportunities overseas.
