Egypt Security Forces Arrest Suspect In Sharqiya Blast

Egyptian security forces have arrested a suspect in Sunday’s explosion targeting the Military Intelligence Headquarters in Egypt’s Nile Delta Governorate of Sharqiya, the third attack on the country in under a week, a security official told state news agency MENA.

An Egyptian security official said the Sharqiya blast resulted from a remotely-detonated explosive device planted inside a privately-owned Hyundai Verna car, according to Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website.

The explosion caused partial damage to the building’s gates, the same source added.

An official Health Ministry report released Sunday afternoon confirmed three had been injured in the blast, with wounds ranging from partial concussions to bone fractures.

Earlier on Sunday, Military Spokesman Ahmed Ali stated the blast had injured four soldiers and partially damaged the building’s rear façade.

Egypt witnessed two explosions last week. On Tuesday, a huge bomb rocked the Security Directorate building in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, killing 16 people and injuring more than 135, while on Thursday an explosion near a public bus in eastern Cairo’s Nasr City injured five people.

Ansar Bait Al-Maqdis, an Al-Qaeda-inspired Sinai-based militant group, claimed responsibility for the Mansoura bombing, yet Egypt’s interim government blames the Muslim Brotherhood for the attack. The Brotherhood denies any involvement in the explosion.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Cairo bomb which, according to explosives experts, was planted on the road rather than on the bus.
