Egypt Prosecutor Investigates Media Figures for Insulting Jan 25 Revolution

Prosecutor-general Hisham Barakat ordered Saturday an investigation into complaints filed against prominent media figures Tawfiq Okasha, Hayat El-Dardeery, Ahmed Mousa, Rola Kharsa and Mostafa Bakry.

The accused all host their own programmes on various sattelite channels.

Okasha is known for his controversial political stances. Okasha’s Faraeen channel had been previously suspended for a time for its controversial content.

Ahmed Moussa hosts a show on CBC. Kharsa and Bakry host shows on Sada El-Balad. El-Dardeery works at Okasha’s Faraeen.

The complaint filed against the media figures accuses them of spreading false information, insulting the Egyptian people, threatening national security by hosting Mubarak-era corrupt figures during, insulting the January 25 Revolution and defending Mubarak regime figures.

Legal complaints against media and public figures have become more common since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
