Egypt: Cabinet Approves Broad Antiterrorism Bill

by Salma Ayman

Egypt’s cabinet approved a draft antiterrorism law on Wednesday that would give the government blanket power to ban groups on charges ranging from harming national unity to disrupting public order.

The authorities have cracked down on Islamist, secular and liberal opposition since the army toppled President Mohamed Morsi, an Islamist, last year.

The legislation would help entrench the crackdown in the criminal code by permitting the authorities to classify groups as “terrorist” according to a long list of offenses, some nonviolent.
