Bothaina Kamel Poised For Second Presidential Run

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Bothaina Kamel has said she intends to run for president in upcoming elections.

Kamel, a well-known broadcaster and feminist, has completed her medical check-up, a requirement for all prospective candidates.

Another requirement is 25,000 recommendations from registered voters nationwide. The number is fewer than the 30,000 recommendations required in the 2012 election, which Kamel failed to secure.

Kamel was the only woman to apply for the 2012 presidential race.

She is well-known for standing up to pro-Mubarak figures in the government-owned Radio and Television Union.

The final and official list of candidates for the 2014 election will be announced on 2 May.

The election will take place on 26/27 May.

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, Nasserist politician Hamdeen Sabbahi and lawyer Mortada Mansour have all said they will run.

The current interim president, Adly Mansour, was the head of the constitutional court before Morsi’s ouster.

Morsi was removed from the presidency on 3 July 2013, following mass protests demanding early presidential elections.

El-Sisi, who resigned from his posts as army chief and defence minister to run for president, was among a number of national, political and religious figures who announced Morsi’s ouster on live television. He is expected to win by a landslide.
