Boat Accident Kills 11 Egyptians In Red Sea

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Eleven Egyptian fishermen died on Sunday when their boat ploughed into a ship off the Red Sea coast.

Eleven others were rescued in the accident, which occurred after dawn between the eastern coastal city of Raes Gharib—some 360km south of Cairo—and Al-Tour port in the Gulf of Suez, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported, citing local fishermen’s leader, Bakry Abul-Hassan.

The boat had 40 Egyptian fishermen aboard, and rescue and search teams are looking for 18 missing, a security official told state news agency MENA.

A port official said ten local boats were helping search for those missing.

In one of the worst sea accidents, around 1,000 people, mostly Egyptians, were killed in February 2006 when a ferry caught fire and sank in the Red Sea.
