Saudi King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz received Egypt’s Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayeb in Riyadh on Monday to discuss issues including consolidating efforts to correct erroneous and extremist religious doctrines promoted by terrorist organisations, according to a statement by Al-Azhar.

The grand imam of Al-Azhar, the world’s highest institution of Sunni Islamic learning, highlighted during the meeting that cooperation with Saudi Arabia would aid in spreading Islam and enhancing discourse with different religions and cultures.

The Saudi king, who is also Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, hailed El-Tayeb’s efforts in spreading moderate Islamic thinking, describing his visit as one of immense importance to the kingdom.

El-Tayeb said that Egypt and Saudi Arabia have strong ties on both the official and societal levels, and that both countries form a pillar of security for the Arab world and serve as an example for Arab cooperation.

In March, Al-Azhar’s grand imam met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman in Cairo to discuss fighting extremism.
