The number of tourists coming to Egypt rose 19.3% to 845,642 in May 2012, compared to 708,784 in the same month a year earlier as confidence in the Arab country rises, data from the government’s official statistics agency showed Sunday.

However, the increase did not surpass the highs of 2010 when 1.2 million tourists visited Egypt in the same month, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics said in its emailed statement.

The total number of nights spent by tourists stood at 9.8 million in May 2012, against 7.3 million nights a year earlier, CAPMAS said.

In May, the minister of tourism Mounir Fakhry Abd Elnour, said Egypt experienced a 32% surge in tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2012, compared with a year ago, and expects visitors to the Arab country this year to hit levels last seen in 2010, before the revolution.
