Turkish airstrikes in Iraq are ‘unacceptable encroachment’: Egypt FM

by Yomna Yasser

Egypt has said recent airstrikes by Turkey against suspected Kurdish rebel positions in northern Iraq are an “unacceptable encroachment” on the Iraqi sovereignty and lands. In a statement on Thursday, the foreign ministry slammed the strikes as an “unjustified, evil assault that would make the regional situation more complex and undermine counter-terrorism efforts.”

On Tuesday, Turkish war planes hit Kurdish forces in neighbouring Iraq in what Ankara described as “terrorist havens” and also carried out strikes on Kurdish militia forces in Syria. The strikes killed more than two dozen Kurdish fighters in Iraq and Syria, Reuters quoted sources on the ground as saying. The Turkish army claimed that 70 militants were killed.
