Turkish Airlines to resume flights to Sharm El-Sheikh in September

by Noha Gad

Turkish Airlines announced on Monday that it will resume flights to Sharm El-Sheikh in September, according to the Turkish Dogan news agency.

Turkish Airlines suspended its flights to Sharm El-Sheikh City following the downing of a Russian passenger jet over Sinai on 31 October 2015. All 224 crew members and passengers on board were killed, and the incident had a profound impact on Egypt’s tourism sector.

The Turkish Airlines flights are expected to resume on 10 September from Istanbul Atatürk Airport heading to Sharm El-Sheikh airport, according Dogan news agency.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the downing of the Russian aeroplane; however, investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

Egypt initially declared that there was no evidence that the aeroplane was brought down due to a “terrorist act”. However, Moscow has claimed that terrorists were responsible for the deaths, after its investigation committee said explosive material was found in the remains.

Russia issued an immediate suspension of all commercial flights to and from Egypt, pending a report on the state of security procedures at Egyptian airports; other countries imposed a partial suspension of flights such as Turkey.
