Government to present programme to parliament in March: Egypt’s PM

by aya salah

Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail has said his government will present its strategy programme to the parliament during the second half of March.

Ismail made the remarks during an interview on state TV on Monday.

The government can only remain in power if its policy programme is approved by the parliament.

Ismail said the policy program is aimed at achieving social justice and overhauling the country’s administrative sector, with a special focus on education, health and transport. The government was put in place before the current chamber–the first in a three-year lapse–was elected late last year.

Under Egypt’s constitution, the parliament is required to endorse the current government’s agenda. If it does not win the chamber’s trust, the party or the coalition of the largest parliamentary bloc has to name a new government head.

Egypt remained without parliament since an Islamist-dominated chamber was dissolved by court order in 2012.
