An Egyptian army soldier died on Tuesday when a suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt in North Sinai’s El-Arish area, state news agency MENA reported.
Security sources told MENA that the bombing occurred during a security raid west of El-Arish.
Egypt has been working to quell an Islamist insurgency that has spiked since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.
The Islamist militants, who are based in parts of North Sinai, have killed hundreds of security personnel since Morsi’s ouster. Authorities have also reported that hundreds of militants have been killed in army campaigns in the governorate.
The country’s most active militant group, Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis — now an affiliate of the ISIS group — has claimed responsibility for the most attacks.
