Sisi says journalist who screamed at him during press conference ‘still Egyptian’

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has said that an Egyptian journalist who shouted abuse at him during a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday is “still an Egyptian girl” even if the president disagrees with her.

During a joint press conference with Chancellor Angela Merkel, the woman screamed that El-Sisi was “a murderer.” Other Egyptian journalists present shouted her down with chants of “long live Egypt.”

At a meeting with Egyptian expats in Berlin on Thursday, which was recorded and broadcast on Egyptian state television, El-Sisi commented that he wanted to speak with the journalist.

“I wanted to talk to her individually and explain the harm that would have impacted on Egypt and also on the leaders that she believes in if they continued to rule the country,” explained El-Sisi, referring to former president Mohamed Morsi who was ousted in 2013.

He also asked expats to convey “the real picture” of what Egypt and the whole region could have gone through, if the Islamist leaders were still ruling Egypt.

El-Sisi on Thursday concluded his first official visit to Germany, where he met with Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck, amid concerns in some quarters in Berlin over his country’s human rights record.

He has also witnessed the signing of a major deal with German engineering titan Siemens, worth 8 billion euros ($9 billion).
