Two people were shot by security forces late on Saturday while breaking a night-time curfew in place in the northern Sinai Peninsula for over three months.

The pair was injured in the leg after security personnel in the provincial capital of Al-Arish shot at them for breaking the dusk-to-dawn curfew, a security source told Aswat Masriya.

The curfew was originally instated in late October following a jihadist attack that killed 31 Egyptian soldiers in Al-Arish, near the Gaza Strip.

Two others were shot earlier on Saturday also for breaking the exceptional measure, extended late in January for three more months.

Following the October attack, the military began demolishing houses and clearing resident along Egypt’s border with Gaza to set up a buffer zone in order to stop what it describes as the flow of weapons and militants in and out of Sinai.

Ten days ago, simultaneous attacks by jihadist fighters targeted security forces with rockets and car bombs in Al-Arish, killing at least 30, including civilians.
