Police Use Teargas To Protect Upper Egypt Police Station From Attack

by Amwal Al Ghad English

Police prevented a crowd from breaking into a police station in Upper Egypt’s Aswan on Wednesday to free a number of detainees held in the building.

Police dispersed the crowd with teargas and arrested six of the assailants, reported Al-Ahram Arabic website.

The crowd were attempting to free a group detained after being accused of involvement in a fight.

According to the report, dozens of the detainees’ relatives threw stones at the police station, leading the police to fire teargas.

A police conscript was injured in the incident, having sustained bruises to the chest.

Attacks on police stations were common in Egypt in the months following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi last summer. Morsi’s Islamist supporters repeatedly faced off with police in deadly clashes.

A security crackdown on Islamist groups has gradually decreased confrontations of late.
