US Secretary of State John Kerry will visit Egypt on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, said a spokesman for Egypt’s foreign ministry.
Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shukry received a phone call from Kerry on Sunday evening to discuss the escalation in hostilities between Israel and Gaza rulers Hamas.
Kerry’s visit to Egypt will be the second in less than a month. He last visited Egypt on 22 June to meet with newly-elected President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and discuss regional developments, especially in Iraq and Syria.
Kerry’s visit to Egypt will also come a day after an urgent meeting of Arab foreign ministers was held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo in a bid to seek an end to violence that has left over 100 Palestinians dead since Israel launched a campaign of air strikes last Tuesday.
Kerry was in Vienna this week to attend talks over Iran’s nuclear programme.
