Pro-Morsi Alliance Slams New Draft Constitution

by Salma Ayman

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy that supports ousted President Mohamed Morsi has accused a new draft constitution of protecting the army’s interests.

The 50-member constituent assembly was formed in September to amend a constitution written by an Islamist-led assembly at the end of last year under the Mohamed Morsi administration.

Chaired by Amr Moussa, the constituent assembly voted on 138 out of 247 articles on Saturday in a session that lasted about four hours and is expected to finish by Sunday and present the amendments to the interim president by Monday.

In a statement late on Saturday, the Islamist alliance described Moussa as “Feloul” (remnant of the Hosni Mubarak regime) and accused the amended constitution of serving anti-revolution forces.

The alliance called on Egyptians to commemorate the anniversary of the constitution passed last year under Morsi.

Egypt’s army ousted Morsi in July in response to mass demonstrations across the country, suspended the constitution and announced early presidential elections.

Interim President Adli Mansour is expected to call for a referendum within 30 days of receiving the amended constitution in accordance with the roadmap announced on July 3.

The constitutional referendum, which according to interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi will take place in the second half of January, will be followed by parliamentary then presidential elections.
