Egypt is set to open the Rafah crossing with the Gaza strip to “emergency only” cases for four hours on Wednesday and Thursday, state news agency MENA reported on Monday.
A security source told MENA that the decision to re-open the border crossing with the Palestinian enclave from 10am to 2pm was in response to a call by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbass, who had earlier on Monday phoned Egypt’s Intelligence Chief Mohamed Tohamy to request that the crossing be opened to allow the passage of people in need of medical treatment and students.
Egypt had “indefinitely” closed the Rafah crossing from the Hamas-ruled coastal enclave on 15 August, citing security reasons behind the move a day after deadly violence nationwide.
