U.S. Embassy In Cairo Disables Twitter Page After Jon Stewart Tweet

by Amwal Al Ghad English

The United States Embassy in Cairo’s Twitter account temporarily shut down Wednesday following a spat with an official account affiliated with Egypt President Mohamed Morsi over a Jon Stewart clip. The account, @USEmbassyCairo, disappeared for under an hour before reappearing, sans the Stewart tweet.

The public tiff was sparked by a tweet from the U.S. embassy linking to a video of television host Jon Stewart lambasting Morsi in a Monday segment over the Egyptian government’s arrest of political comedian Bassem Youssef. The deleted tweet has been preserved as a screenshot:

An official Egyptian presidential account, @EgyPresidency, called the American embassy’s tweeted link “inappropriate” behavior for a diplomatic mission and labeled the video “negative political propaganda.”
