Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated crime drama, Killers of the Flower Moon, was premiered in the 76th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

The star-studded film’s showing was attended by Tobey Maguire, Cate Blanchett, Robbie Williams and Kristen Dunst at Grand Theatre Lumiere.

The film, based on the best-selling book of the same name, is a four-hour story of a series of murders targeting the Native American Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are among the cast, along with Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser and John Lithgow.

Scorsese was in contact with the Osage for the film, with 44 roles played by Osage actors and Native American actors, Scorsese mentioned in a press release.

“Shooting out there in Oklahoma, there’s lots of grass. I’m a New Yorker. I was very surprised, wild horses and stuff, we also lived in the world with the Osage. We really miss it now,” Scorsese added.

“The risk is there, showing in a theater in the first place, But the risk for this subject matter, and then for running time. It’s a commitment.” said Scorsese.

“It’s a project I am proud of and I cannot wait to share it with you all,” DiCaprio tweeted. Following the screening, the movie earned a nine-minute standing ovation, with Gladstone clearly tearful.

Apple and Paramount Pictures will be releasing the movie exclusively in theaters on October 6 before it is streamed, making it eligible to compete at Cannes.
