EU ambassador to Sudan assaulted in his home

The European Union’s ambassador to Sudan was attacked in his residency in Khartoum according to Josep Borrell, the EU foreign policy chief, on Monday.

The attack came as a result of the ongoing outbreak in the country that led to violence and assault.

Borrell tweeted saying: “A few hours ago, the EU Ambassador in Sudan was assaulted in his own residency,” “this constitutes a gross violation of the Vienna Convention.

Security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law,” Borrell continued

Nabila Massrali, EU spokeswoman, told AFP that the ambassador was “ok” amid the assault.

“The security of the staff is our priority. The EU delegation has not been evacuated. Security measures are being assessed.” Said Massrali.

The fighting broke three days ago in Sudan between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), killing more than 180 people and injuring over 1,800, according to the UN.
