The Group of 7 (G7) Ministers of energy and environment have concluded their talks in the Japanese city of Sapporo on Sunday.
The ministers reiterated their pledges regarding clean energy transition in the official communique released.
“We reaffirm our commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 at the latest,” the document stated.
G- 7 nations, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the U.S., are the source of about 25 percent of global carbon emissions. The Global South, on the other hand, is more affected by climate change and less equipped to deal with it.
Sultan Al Jaber, the president-designate for COP28 have urged the Group to provide more financial support to developing nations.
In a separate statement, Al Jaber, who also attended Japan talks, called for a “new deal” on climate finance.
Climate advocates expressed concerns the released document “included significant amounts of nuance to allow for differences between the G-7 energy strategies,” according to the Associated Press.
