Yangtze energy corridor lights up ’23 with more power

The world’s largest clean energy corridor, featuring six mega hydropower stations on China’s Yangtze River, increased its electricity generation in 2023, Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd. (CYPC) data revealed a 5.34 per cent year-on-year increase, with the corridor producing over 276 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.

This production equals a reduction of about 83 million tons in standard coal consumption and a decrease of over 200 million tons in carbon dioxide emissions.

The corridor, completed in December 2022, includes the fully operational Baihetan hydropower station in the upper section of the Yangtze River in southwest China, along with five other stations: Wudongde, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Three Gorges, and Gezhouba.

These six hydropower plants, with a total installed capacity of around 71.7 million kilowatts, as stated by CYPC, distribute electricity from the resource-abundant west to the energy-demanding regions in the east.
