U.S. NPR to stop using Twitter

by Sama Mousa

The American National Public Radio (NPR) announced that it will no longer post on Twitter in protest against a misguided label on the platform, according to Reuters published on Wednesday.

According to NPR the label on the social media platform implies government involvement in the editorial content they post.

NPR added that Twitter has refused its continuous requests to remove the inaccurate label “state-affiliated media”, now changed to “government-funded media” because it does not accurately capture its governance structure.

“If we continued tweeting, every post would carry that misleading label,” NPR said.

In an interview, Twitter owner Elon Musk said on Wednesday that the company is working on being more accurate.

“Our goal is simply to be as truthful and accurate as possible… We’re adjusting the label to be ‘publicly funded’ which I think is perhaps not too objectionable,” he said.

NPR said it will remain active on other social media platforms, and might expand to include emerging third-party platforms.
